Networking

There are two types of networks which are most popular with home and small business, wired and wireless, each have their benefits depending on what you are wanting to achieve with your computer systems.
Our networking and Internet services will help you find and implement the best system to suit you and your budget. Visit our Products page for a complete range of networking products.

Wired

This is based on computers being connected to each other via a network cable.
You can have up to one hundred meters in distance between computers with a wired network.
A wired network still has the fastest speed available, with most computers capable of one gigabit per second, and in the future, ten and one hundred gigabit speeds being available.
A wired network is still the most ideal setup for small business intranet's and home networking of multiple computers, including home entertainment centers because of the speed.
These are still the cheapest alternative between the two, as the cost of a network cable can start as low as ten dollars.
Security is also higher using a wired network as there is no way of broadcasting the signal.
Newer technology has seen the introduction of the 'Home Plug', which still is a wired solution, but instead of running networking cables through a house to connect multiple computers, they use the house wiring as the network cabling and at the same speeds as network cables.

Wireless

These systems are becoming more popular, as people are using laptop computers for portability and are roaming more.
Business has taken up wireless in greater numbers, this allows them more collaboration on the go.
Wireless networking suffers from slower speeds than wired networks and a lack of 'hotspots' for connectivity, although the latter is changing.
Security has been an issue in the past and still can be if the wireless network is not setup correctly, incorrect setup can lead to your signal being broadcast for other people to pick up and exploit.
The cost of a wireless network can be higher, a home network would typically need a wireless router and wireless network cards for each computer.
This may be the best alternative if portability is what you would like to achieve.
